Grilled Cheese Sandwich (Printable)

Golden buttery bread with gooey melted cheddar, a quick comfort classic perfect for any time.

# Components:

→ Bread

01 - 4 slices sandwich bread (white, whole wheat, or sourdough)

→ Dairy

02 - 4 slices cheddar cheese (or your favorite melting cheese)
03 - 2 tbsp unsalted butter, softened

# Steps:

01 - Spread a thin, even layer of softened butter on one side of each bread slice.
02 - Place two bread slices buttered side down on a clean surface. Layer two cheese slices on each unbuttered side. Top with remaining bread slices, buttered side up, to form two complete sandwiches.
03 - Heat a non-stick skillet or griddle over medium heat until evenly warmed.
04 - Place sandwiches in the heated skillet. Cook for 3 to 4 minutes per side, pressing gently with a spatula occasionally, until bread achieves golden-brown color and cheese is completely melted.
05 - Remove sandwiches from pan and allow to cool for 1 to 2 minutes. Slice diagonally and serve immediately while warm.

# Expert Advice:

01 -
  • Takes less than 15 minutes from start to finish, perfect for busy weekdays or lazy weekends
  • The outside gets impossibly crispy while the inside stays molten and creamy
  • Endless customization options mean you never get bored
02 -
  • Medium heat is crucial, too high and the bread burns before the cheese melts, too low and you end up with sad soggy bread
  • Pressing down gently with your spatula helps the cheese adhere to both bread slices, preventing that annoying slide off when you take a bite
03 -
  • Grate your cheese instead of using slices for faster melting and more even distribution
  • Cover the pan with a lid for the first minute of cooking to help the cheese melt without burning the bread
